Ecological Stewardship

The control of bush honeysuckle is one of the biggest battles in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The LFUCG Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works, Division of Environmental Services recognizes this issue. The city hired EcoGro to remove honeysuckle from nearly 2 acres of city-owned land connected to Valley Park. Using chainsaws, power tools and a 12” towable woodchipper, the team at EcoGro cleared this invasive species from the stream buffer. The chips were spread at the base of trees to serve as mulch, offer protection from mowers and improve the soil over time. Native grass seed was sown to help prevent any soil erosion and establish a stream buffer of native vegetation. On-going and regular stewardship visits keep weeds out.
