Wetland Construction
In conjunction with the Mill Creek stream restoration, multiple wetlands were constructed to provide both aquatic habitat diversity and water quality treatment. Most were created as groundwater wetlands within the floodplain hyporheic zone. However, one special wetland established above the floodplain was built by Mill Creek Elementary students. Wetland guru Tom Biebighauser, Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Forest Service, led the students through wetland construction. Tom explained the importance of wetlands and provided a unique "hands-on" educational experience the students will never forget. They helped prepare the soil, installed a liner, sowed seed, spread straw and used rocks to build habitat features. The site continues to be used as an outdoor classroom for Mill Creek teachers.
